Jerry Hom's TEMPEST!
This just in from a private collection...
Knife is in close to mint condition. Tiny scuff on the end of the safe handle where the latch has removed the ano. Does not appear to have been flipped, used or dropped. Tip intact. Great lockup.
Comes with original Bill's Custom Case and Hom Certificate dated 6/5/2014.
Here are some details from our original post for the Tempest:
The Tempest comes with a handground and hand finished blade with Solid Ti Handles and Spacers which swing on a precision bushing system.
Here is what Jerry says:
After close to two years of development, I am proud to announce the release of the Tempest Balisong. The first 25 Tempests are finished and are en route to their new owners, and EDC Knives will have some available...
The finished Tempest Balisong is absolutely amazing. While there were numerous delays, there have also been small features added to the knife since the pre-production knives.
-The pivots themselves have a dimpled pattern and have been individually satin finished. The diameter now exactly matches the bushings and it is one very solid and great looking assembly.
-The pivot screws have been replaced with better threading and finish (shiny!).
-Latch profile has slightly reworked and the three lightening holes have been chamfered.
I am absolutely confident that the knife will impress in fit, finish, and function.
Please do read the comments below on common concerns and questions regarding usage, details, and care.
-The Precision Bushing System means that each knife will have extremely tight tolerances. While this is a great feature in a Mid-Tech, it also means that there will be more friction than a knife that has looser fitting parts. So the Tempest will need to be well lubricated to function properly. Each Tempest has been oiled with Benchmade BlueLube. In addition, the pivot area will have to be kept clean of excessive dirt and debris.
-The pivot assembly is all heat treated and hardened. This means that the lock up and action of the Tempest should be consistent from day one until many years from now, even with constant use. A high hardness alloy tang pin was selected to increase durability, but unfortunately will be prone to corrosion if neglected. Each Tempest tang pin has been coated with Boeshield T9 to prevent corrosion, however should be periodically monitored and treated with Flitz if necessary.
-The Tempest has components that are primarily CNC machined. However, each Tempest includes a great deal of hand work, hand finishing, and of course hand tuning. There are subtle variations in each knife, and a small amount of “imperfections” in each knife. Each handle has a machined finish and will also vary slightly in surface machining patterns and radiusing path.
-Anodizing is not prone to rubbing off from your fingers, but can be prone to scratches from hard objects. Oils such as the oils from your fingers can cause the appearance of anodizing to “rub off” or change color. If the oil is cleaned off, the handles will be the original color.
-Complete disassembly of the knife is not recommended, however if so, the knife components must go together EXACTLY in the same orientation as it was. Each handle is different and each bushing is different. No screws have been loctited as the knife was meant for swapping the spacers or latch, however they may loosen up from use if a thread locker is not applied.
